Short answer: for most workouts under 60 minutes, plain water does the job. But “most” is carrying a lot of weight in that sentence. If you sweat heavily, train in heat, do doubles, or eat low-carb, a short session can still leave you meaningfully down on sodium — and you tend to feel it in the session after.
Where the 60-Minute Rule Came From
The one-hour threshold is not marketing. It traces back to the American College of Sports Medicine position stand on exercise and fluid replacement, which recommends including sodium — roughly 0.5 to 0.7 grams per liter of fluid — in drinks consumed during exercise lasting longer than an hour. Below that mark, the guidance is essentially: drink to thirst, and water is fine.
The logic is straightforward. Muscle glycogen is not usually the limiter in the first 60 to 90 minutes of moderate work, and total sweat losses across a 30- or 45-minute session are small enough that a normal diet replaces them by dinner. Add a sports drink to that and you are mostly adding calories.
The Research Is Messier Than the Rule
When researchers narrowed the question to intense exercise in the 30-to-60-minute window, the picture got less tidy. A review of nine studies of hard cycling and running lasting 30 to 60 minutes found that six showed a performance benefit from a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink. That is not a slam dunk, and the participants were trained athletes working near threshold rather than someone jogging easy for 40 minutes. But it is enough to treat the 60-minute line as a guideline, not a physiological cliff.
Two caveats worth keeping. Some of that benefit likely comes from the carbohydrate rather than the electrolytes, and part of it may be a mouth-sensing effect rather than true fuel delivery. And for short, explosive work — sprinting, jumping, agility drills — the studies have not shown a consistent sports drink advantage at all.
The Two Numbers That Actually Decide It
Whether your sub-hour workout is an electrolyte event comes down to how fast you sweat and how salty that sweat is.
Sweat sodium concentration averages about 35 mEq/L, but the range across individuals runs from roughly 10 to 70 mEq/L — about 230 to 1,600 mg of sodium per liter. That is close to a sevenfold spread between the lightest and saltiest sweaters. Sweat rates vary just as widely, from about 0.5 L/h for a small athlete in an air-conditioned gym to over 2 L/h for a large athlete working in heat.
Run the math on both ends of a 45-minute session:
- Light sweater, cool gym: about 0.5 L/h for 0.75 h at 250 mg/L works out to roughly 90 mg of sodium lost. That is a rounding error. Drink water.
- Heavy, salty sweater in a hot room: about 1.8 L/h for 0.75 h at 1,400 mg/L works out to roughly 1,900 mg of sodium. That approaches a full day of recommended intake, gone in 45 minutes.
Same duration, completely different problem. This is why blanket advice about the one-hour rule fails so many people: it answers a question about the clock when the real question is about your sweat.
Five Situations Where a Short Workout Still Needs Electrolytes
- You are a visibly salty sweater. White crust on your hat brim, stinging eyes, gritty skin after a session — crude signals, but real ones that you sit at the high end of the sodium range.
- Heat, humidity, or no airflow. A 45-minute indoor cycling class, a hot yoga session, or an August garage workout can produce more sweat loss than a cool two-hour ride outdoors.
- You are training twice a day. Preseason two-a-days and morning-plus-evening splits stack deficits. What you skip at 6 a.m. shows up as a flat, crampy 5 p.m. session.
- You eat low-carb or keto. Cutting carbohydrate lowers insulin, which increases sodium excretion through the kidneys. Cutting packaged food cuts dietary sodium at the same time. The two effects compound.
- You train fasted or first thing in the morning. You arrive already down a night of insensible losses, with nothing in the tank to buffer what comes next.
What to Reach For
If you land in one of those buckets, the target is sodium, not sugar. The options sort out roughly like this:
- Low-calorie tablets and powders. Nuun Sport (around 300 mg sodium per tablet) and Skratch Labs Sport Hydration (around 380 mg per serving) are sensible defaults for short, hard sessions where you want minerals without a meal worth of carbohydrate.
- High-sodium powders. LMNT delivers 1,000 mg of sodium per stick. That is a lot for a 40-minute workout and is better reserved for genuinely heavy sweat days, doubles, or heat acclimation — though for a salty sweater in a hot room it is not unreasonable.
- Traditional carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks. Gatorade Thirst Quencher (about 270 mg sodium and 21 g sugar per 12 oz) still makes sense when the short session is truly intense and you want the carbohydrate. For an easy 40 minutes it is mostly unnecessary calories.
- Concentrated brine shots. Fast Pickle and other pickle-juice products take a different approach: a small, very high-sodium volume taken before or right after, rather than sipped throughout. That format fits short workouts well, since there is not much time to drink anything during a 45-minute session anyway, and it saves you from sloshing a full bottle around during intervals.
A Simple Protocol for Sub-Hour Sessions
- Before: 12 to 16 oz of fluid in the two hours prior. If the session will be hot, or you know you are a salty sweater, make that an electrolyte drink or a brine shot instead of plain water.
- During: drink to thirst. Under an hour that usually means 8 to 16 oz total. Do not force fluid — overdrinking during short workouts is a real, if uncommon, hyponatremia risk.
- After: if you lost more than about 2% of body weight (roughly 3 lb for a 150 lb athlete), replace it with about 1.25 to 1.5 liters per kilogram lost, with sodium in it.
Weigh yourself before and after a typical session once or twice. Ten minutes of arithmetic will tell you more about your own needs than any generic rule ever will.
The Bottom Line
The 60-minute rule is a reasonable default for a reasonable default athlete: moderate intensity, temperate room, average sweat rate, normal diet. Almost nobody is all four of those at once. If your session is short but hot, hard, doubled, or fasted — or if your sweat leaves salt on your face — electrolytes earn their place well before the hour mark. If none of that describes you, save your money and drink water.
